What’s a Penny Auction?

New – Updated SkoreIt Promo Codes as of 11/15!

A user posted a question to our forum about Skoreit’s sudden influx of new players, we looked into this and found out that SkoreIt.com has recently rolled out a national ad campaign on ESPN and is being mentioned on the Mike & Mike in the Morning Show, they’ve also told us that they were a top trended search term on Google today.

Many Penny Auction Watch members have received items from SkoreIt and are overall pleased with their experiences on this penny auction site.

A PAW member writes of her positive experience with SkoreIt:

“Recently I became aware of penny auctions. I decided to check out a couple of site and see how they worked. After reviewing several sites I decided to try Skoreit.com for my first experience. What swayed me towards their site were their low bidding cost. After reveiwing previous won auctions I noticed most I sold for under $25.00, which was another bonus. After purchasing my first bids I proceeded to bid on a camera retail value $130.00. I won the bid at $2.79 with the cost of bids and shipping my total cost were approximately $22.00. Feeling overjoyed I bid on a laptop computer, $100.00 gift card, Flip video camera and an ipod touch. All of which I won at great prices. What was more impressive, all these items I received within4 business days and they were in great condition. I really can’t say enough good about my experience….thank you Skoreit.com for making a penny auction site fun and profitable.”

Skoreit is a penny auction that launched early this year,  and is now accredited by the BBB and has an A- rating!  [click here] if you’re wondering what a penny auction is! Also, to learn more read our interview with SkoreIt from February 25, 2010.

I never liked the site since they charge for shipping, so I might as well waste the bids on a cheap $15 Subway Giftcard. After wasting half of my own bids after the autobidders went away and other people who are on the site, I won card for $4.12. Add the shipping, the grand total is $6.11. Charging $1.99 on a giftcard where you can just waste a $0.44 with a stamp and envelope.

Ok deal. I might as well waste it on another cheap Subway gift card.

I usually stay away from sites that overcharge for shipping, especially giftcards.

I SKORED! I had followed the instructions above to get the 60 free bids, around noon today I won a $100 winners choice giftcard and a $50 kohl's card both for $8.87 first class mail shipping included and I still have 10 bids left! Not too shabby, of course I will wait to see how long thier shipping takes and then bid bid and bid some more…3 wins per day I got the notice, I would say that's fair. So far so good…

I paid for 30 bids ($.99 per bid), got 16 bids using promo code ESPN, got 4 more bids using promo code vanpelt. Used all of them up and got nothing. Didn’t like the Bid Agents AT ALL ! Hate bidding on something only to be out bid by someone who probably isn’t even online. Plas add in the 5 or 6 times I hit the Bid Now button after it said GOING TWICE, only to see it switch to SOLD. Didn’t run that fast when I was the winning bid until there were numerous bidders apparently waiting to out bid me.
Wastes alot of time and seems like too much of a scam to waste anymore time and money on.

Skoreit.com and similar penny auction sites seem like a great deal until you really break down what these companies are doing, how much they are really making off each auction item, and how small your chances of actually winning one of these auctions are. For example, I was watching an auction for an iPad that retails for $499. Last I checked the auction was at about $80.00 for the iPad. Seems like a great deal for one lucky bidder if it ends near that price! So let's say it did end at $80.00, that's a total of 8000 penny bids that range from $.60 to .99 per bid. Even if half of those 8000 bids were free promo bids, skoreit.com made an astonishing $2000.00 to $4000.00 dollars on that iPad that at most they paid full retail of $499.00 for! Wow! Seems like they, the company skoreit.com, are the ones that are really scoring here! I have to hand it to them they have created a phenomenal Internet business model that is going to make them a fortune off of gullible people that think they are getting a great deal, but in reality are literally playing a mini version of the lottery, or a low odds Vegas slot machine. And when 1 gullible person finally figures it out and moves on, there will be a hundred more to take his or her place!

I agree, looking at some auctions one user just happened to have won 3 high end items with in hours!!! I think its an insider scam going on, get others to keep on bidding but at the end an internal person ‘wins’ this person was a member since June and had never won an item til last night.

I have placed bids on quite a few items at skore it in the last 2 weeks. Some were my promo bids and others that I purchased. I have yet to win an auction or even come close. I see many auctions that I didn’t participate in finish at under $1. Why is it that no matter what auction I bid on(not top end items just 60bids bidpaks, xbox games, $25-50 gift cards) never go without a fight? If I bid on something, there are tons of bidders(yes, I know there are tons because of the espn promo) and if I don’t bid on something, it magically goes for $0.47. Has anyone else experienced this?

Another thing is the powerbidders. It doesn’t make sense to have a total cost to a bidder be $152.50 on a $100 gift card. And I refuse to accept the notion that a powerbidder needs to show they will stop at nothing to scare others off and get a reputation. It just happens too often.

The whole thing just smells bad. The goings on are just so weird!

Right. Maybe “u” should read on down the thread to see my rant about the free bid abusers essentially acting as bots for the site. I’ve talked to a number of skorit customer service reps about it and they apparently have no problem with it. I’d assume it’s actually part of their business plan. Pretty lame.

BTW dude, if you’re going to come on these forums (or any online forum) and be a jerk then at least have the cajones to put your real name.

If you study the patterns and use common sense you can very easily make a killing. I'm not going to reveal my secrets, but all you need to do is win once, and you will figure out how to sustain your account forever – or at least until you get bored of thinking….

Hey there, just was wondering if you had any extra time to answer a couple questions regarding strategy in winning some auctions on this website. I have a basic knowledge of how the website works, but it seems as though it is pointless to waste any time or money, to bid against these “willneverstopbidding”, or “nevergiveup” computer BidAgent with infinite bids to enter. Just alittle frustrated. I would appreciate any info you could give me. Thank you very much.

I see the brightside of the BidAgents but I agree with most of you that it is overall unfair. I suggested that they make some auctions available to users without the BidAgent option. That way some auctions PEOPLE actually have to be watching on some, while others can use the BidAgents. If enough people suggest something similar, they should do something about it.

    • Jim G November 4, 2010, 4:02 pm

I like your suggestion. I have won several auctions and find that using a bid agent must scare some people off thus giving me an advantage when I do use bid agents. There are a few things that I find people could do to improve their chances of winning and one is I do not bid if other bid agents are being used. This has worked for me but your suggestion would interest me even more. I hope skoreit picks up on it.

I have to agree, the bid agent is an unfair advantage for those "professional bidders", who basically do this for a living. There definitely should be separate bids for those people, such as I, who have real jobs and need to sleep at night, instead of looking at a computer screen for hours only to get out bid by a software system. If I don't win a bid soon I am done-zo, I'd rather keep my sanity than save a few bucks.

    • Steve December 9, 2010, 3:01 pm

I couldn’t agree more Jeff. I tried this site today and will be cancelling today for the reasons you and everyone else mentioned. It’s unfair. If I can only afford 60 bids for $38 or whatever it is, there is some bot or auto bidder machine-gunning it at 500+ bids. way unfair. I’m all for a challenge but I’m not about to take a civil war rifle into a battle of tanks and machine gunners! I’m sure there is some form of strategy but come on…the risks FAR OUTWEIGH the chances of winning anything. sure, you can get something for more on ebay but at least you can bid and bid and not pay anything for bidding. if I lose on ebay I also don’t lose my shirt. Sure I can win something for a few bucks…yeah right

The free bids have become a HUGE problem at skoreit.com. People are abusing the heck out of the free promo bids by opening multiple accounts with free bids and then camping on auctions. It' s no fun and COMPLETELY UNFAIR bidding against someone who has absolutely nothing invested in the outcome of the auction. When I spend good money on my bids and play by the rules I expect a level playing field. AVOID SKOREIT until they fix this problem. Or, what the heck, join in the fun and use free bids all day to win items for nothing. Maybe it will force them to take notice and fix this problem.

I just sat here for 4 hours thinking late night would be easier because of less people. 2 people using bidagent set the agent to 5 seconds and must have had thousands of dollars in bid points. The auction i was just looking at and is still going is for a 240 bigpak. Both people i just mentioned used over 400 bids each to win 240 … and it's still going. It would appear these 2 bidders are not people but a computer set to automated compete to up to profit. Every now and then the 2 people would stop … you see going once, going twice and 3 or 4 single bids come in from random people, then the 2 bidagent people are magically back … i say scam. i'm not putting any more money into this site after watching this.

Skoreit is a legitimate business! But it is a business, and like all other businesses, people are going to try to make money off of it. Just look at the power bidders like rosemare, this person has won 4 ipads this month along with many other items! I myself have now won, 6 auctions without spending a dime. I did win a bid pack with my espn bids and have just used them. This is a good site, but it's not for everyone.

I have joined back on 9/116, i had been keeping a log on what each item was selling for and how many bids it went for. I became familiar with bidder names which you might call power bidders and stayed away from them when bidding. I noticed a new flood of new bidders as of 11/8 thru 11/10. I don’t know if they ran a new promotion in an area, but what this did was ruin anyone who was keeping track of bids This has caused a run up on bids for watches and precious metals by 2 to 5 times what items were going for before 11/8. My opinion is they started loosing money on items and created computer bids to run up items to recover loses. Watches were selling for .85 cents and now go for 3 to 5 dollars and the same type of increase was noticed on precious metals. I’m sure this is happening on other items as well. I would just say buyer beware and do your home work.

Figure this one out; bidder named gethenextone won a silver American Eagle 1 oz. coin with 38 bids @3:40 EST 11/13. The cost for bids used was 0.00 and he just joined 11/12/2010. Person had not won anything in the last 28 days. So where did the 38 free bids come from? This tells me Skoreit is giving away free bids somewhere and it is probably at least 50 because this person had probably bid on something else before now or there really is a scam going on. Does any one know if there are promo codes other than the few you get with ESPN?

Also, i found it comes with ease to go after the smaller products or not as desired, such as 25$ giftcards or a set of knives. All in all it works, just dont be surprised if you dont win.

I believe that Skoreit is using shills to bid against legitimate bidders. Most of the winners using outrageous numbers of bids for an item have blocked their public viewing capability. I watched one bidder use 331 bids on a $250 WalMart gift card.

Skoreit.com does not use bots. “Big Bidder”, I’m flattered but I’m far from being a powerbidder. There are quite a few bidders on Skoreit that I’d never be able to outbid.. lol. Just as others have mentioned, you must do your homework and study the bidders. That goes for ANY auction site. Bidders shelling out more bids than an item is worth use that as part of their “strategy”, so to speak. Also, many times, once a bidder has invested quite a bit of bids on an auction, they become determined not to walk away empty handed. Penny auctions are not for everyone, especially “sore losers”, but I will testify that Skoreit is very legit. They also ship out your winnings pretty fast. Some items take a little longer than others, but I usually receive most items in about a week.

    • Edd February 18, 2011, 11:34 am

So how much are they paying you to make them sound legit? When there is no way to tell if there’s inside bidders and alot of the auctions don’t make sense, I call BS. Just because they may have “let” some people win to look legit doesn’t mean they don’t use bots. How do you know they don’t use bots? Exactly, you don’t know for sure. Then why would you come on here stating that you know they don’t use them? Because you’re obviously getting paid to say it.

Amanda is correct. It is hard to say if a site is legit, has bots or shills. Generally though, if you’ve bidded on a site long enough, you get the feel of whether that site is playing fair or not. I should have stated that, IMO, that is how I feel about Skoreit. 🙂

I’ve been using skoreit for a a couple months now and have been happy with the site. What people have to realize is this is about luck and timing. Your bidding on items that dozens of other people are bidding on. If your not willing to overbid on some items then you will rarely win anything. For example if someone is using a bidagent on a pack of 60 Bids and everyone knows they are only going to bid at most 50 times on that one item then another bid agent or single bidder will wait for them to bid close to that number and then jump on it and then the auction goes on forever. You have to prove to others your not giving up easily and also you cant be greedy and bid on 5 items at the same time and expect to get profit. The penny auctions work off of people’s greed. The people I see running up the cost of bids are mostly new users to the site while the people that are using the bid agents are trying to defend their previous bid. It would be great if someone could put the first bid on an item and win it everytime but people don’t care about other bidders wants or needs. Bidders dont work as teams, they compete against each other. Penny Auctions wouldnt be around if people werent greedy. These sites are profitable businesses not non profit organizations.

Needless to say I got the sh*t bid out of me multiple times, and I feel slighted by these auto-bidding robot mofos. Now that I think about it… it wouldn’t be too much trouble to make a small bot (clientside preferably, but the serverside/PHP option is also available) open a few hundred *scratch*thousand*scratch* new accounts armed with mytrashmail.com email addresses through an anonymous proxy like Tor (of course the identity would be recycled) and rape the hell out of *scratch*my*scratch* that new flatscreen TV I want. I just tried it and what I don’t understand is why someone would blow over 500+ bids on a 240 bid pak? Something’s fishy…

The only thing worse than spending 500 bids to win 240 is spending 499 and winning nothing.

I tried putting in all of those codes, and it only accepted one. Is there anything I can do to have those other codes accepted?

Ken, though it’s possible for sites to use inside bidders, and many have – we’ve talked about them here, many bidders, myself included have won & received items from SkoreIt. They do seem to have been marketing quite a bit. Feel free to join our (free) penny auction forum to learn more & ask questions if you’re still interested in penny auctions.

I have looked at Skoreit and some of the closed auctions and calculated the totals. How can some bidders get bids for a penny each or sometimes even less?
They don’t share that info. Here are some examples.
    Auction #206389 26 bids used: $0.00
    Auction #206394 61 bids used: $0.04
I want dids that are this cheap.
