Swoopo Now an Approved Member of the EAA, Down?

Swoopo

Swoopo has just this week become an approved member of the Entertainment Auction Association (EAA). However, the first penny auction site has been reportedly down “due to technical issues” since yesterday afternoon.

From a 3/16 press release:

“As the leading penny auction site Swoopo has taken another positive step to defend its reputation and counter rumors of dishonest conduct. It has now been certified by the nonprofit Entertainment Auction Association as a fair company.

Swoopo, formerly Telebid, has been operated since 2005 by the Munich based Entertainment Shopping AG and is considered to be the founder of the entertainment auction industry. At its inception the unique business model where brand-name products could be bought at low prices has shown great success and experienced many imitators.

While a large number of the imitators have vanished from the scene, Swoopo is still in the market. Nevertheless, many myths still persist about Swoopo, these rumours are mainly due to the dishonest practices of the ‘black sheep’ that exist within the industry. The word on the Internet grape vine is that Swoopo utilizes bidding agents, ends auctions independently or does not ship items. Swoopo is committed to disproving any rumors of malpractice, which is why it has launched the nonprofit organization The Entertainment Auctions Association in conjunction with fellow auction portals BigDeal and BidCactus.”

I like Swoopo’s format. Since the site went down last Thursday (I think, can’t remember) I have looked at countless other penny auction sites and have found none I really appreciate the format more specifically the bid agent’s interaction within the game. I saw one last night where the agent bid after the counter expired. No matter how many agent’s where involved each placed a single bid after the counter zeroed. While some have placed large bid butlers on Swoopo only to see them evaporate 100 bids at a time til exhausted as soon as their parameters were met and with only a few moments of total time added it works. A bidder still has total control of when and how he bids, it promotes strategy and speeds the auction along. On the site I saw last night the auction expired after 18 hours and still sold for under a hundred dollars. Who has that kind of time and who wants to watch bid agents coincide for two or three hours at a time. Hope Swoopo get’s back online with format intact soon. Wish they’d increase product selection as it was around the holidays too! Beat ya on the site!!! 😉

I took a look and http://blog.swoopo.com/ reports unable to connect to the database. If I had to guess… they had a database failure. If it was a database failure, the continued downtime indicates that they did not have a comprehensive backup and restore plan. With luck, it’ll only be down a few more days.
