Default Script Comparison: Best of the Best

    Hi.

I am new here, but have been reading all the threads about different scripts. It seems that about four rise to the top.

    - Penny Auction Script
    - Penny Auciton Soft
    - PHP Penny Auction
    - Bargains and Fun

Any one have first hand experience with these that can help make a final decision?

    Thanks in advance!

    Thom

Two days with no reply. Not sure if there is not much traffic on the forum or no one using these apps.

I have found a huge difference in the JSON DLs from the AJAX calls. PHP Penny Auction's DL is about 6K, Penny Auction Software's is just 1K, and Penny Auction Script's is 13K. Huge difference. Did not test Bargains and Fun's as I found his pricing model to be very expensive to get all the options that the other offer.

    Anyone using any of these?

Question for you. How is the Bargainsandfun script to expensive?
You have 2 of the 3 scripts listed at 6K & 13K. With a third listed at 1K. Yes his script has add-ons but you can add them later if you choose. Think about all of the horror stories about the other 3 scripts and the additional time and money it takes to get them your way. I have a majority (over 1/2) of the add-ons on my script from BNF and I think I paid less than I would have for ANY other software with the same options. Plus I get a tech in Jeremiah who knows how to fix things when and if they go wrong & Jeremy at bidpigs can do some customizing for little money. So in reality, I do next to nothing to the script or site and it cost WAY less than the others you propose.
I will say I have not launched yet but I have requested things from BNF and they were done quick and reasonable (for an add-on). He has always been there for me with the questions I have and I had been talking with him for months prior to actually paying for the script and he never once appeared to be bothered by a "tire kicker".
Ultimately it is your choice as to which script you buy, how much money you want to spend, how much aggravation you want to deal with, and which script gives you that soft fuzzy feeling. Good luck in what ever you choose.

    Hi HNAppraiser.

Thanks for chiming in. Here are the costs for the other scritps:
    phpPennyAuction - $749
    PennyAuctionSoft - $1299
    PennyAuctionScript - $995

When I priced Bargains and Fun with all the options I was getting with the above, it was well over $2000.

Additionally, I have learned that phpPA and PAS use CakePHP as their framework, which tells their code is CMV and would be easy to modify. I wish someone would build on using Codeigniter because it is MUCH faster than CakePHP.

My issue with phpPA is that their demo site is SO slow. I emailed them and was told it is because there are several admins logged into the system. They does not seem very logical for a web-based app (page requests causes a load, users logged in should not).

PAS and BAF do not use a framework for their apps. I used to code without a framework and know how hard it can be to modify someone else's code that is not in a framework. This just scares me a little.

If PAS did not have such a HUGE AJAX download (compared to the rest) every second it would be my front runner.

    Still confused.

The reason they are so slow is because none of the demo's are on a dedicated server. Once you install a script on a dedicated server you do not see the lag issues. PHP scripts are very easy to modify once you look them over.

thom, I am with you brother. I am at the exact same point as you on in the decision process and have not decided on a vendor yet. I was close to purchasing PAS, but I sent them emails over the last few weeks and have gotten no response. All I was trying to do was match up what they have told me on the phone and in writing with their software contracts. Guess I may have scared them away. But their contracts say you cannot modify their code, even if every one is doing it. All I wanted was for them to state it in their contracts so we would not run into problems when we make the big bucks....

Would appreciate any updates you have on this subject. I keep saying that I am surprised there are no professional companies in this ballgame, who seem to have sold products in the past. Since my company has produce products and services in the tech and web industries, I may throw money and my developers into creating something.....

Default best script for the money

From your guys' experience, what script is the best for the price. Maybe it might not have the most features, but it has enough and gets the job done for the cheapest. Thanks in advance.

Check out my post about pennyauctionsoft.com.

There isn't one company in NA which offers a good script.

I purchased the script from bargainsandfun and have been extremely happy with it and with Jeremiah. Feel free to contact me through my site if you would like to talk more about my experience...

    Thanks!

They are easy to modify, but if you don't know pho well enough to write your own PA script then you probably can't modify the code enough to do the cool features you want to add.

Everyone is always looking for a script to buy, maybe consider finding a developer that wants to go in with you.

My friend recruited me to develop a PA site from the ground up; although, now it looks like he can't deliver with the capital.?.? Just make sure if you find a developer to go in with you have something to bring to the table too.

As far as an off the shelf script, I have found ajax to be my choice... Honest price, and great customer service...
