CityCents Almost Back – But Revised

After nearly two months of being down, new penny auction site for localized deals CityCents.com, appears to almost be ready to return, but with a revised format.

The new format will still offer penny auctions, however, there’s an exception. In order to “unlock” an item to bid on, an allotted number of users must purchase the daily deal. Bonus bids will be given to users who purchase the deals before they’ve been “tipped.”

For instance, CityCents’ Coming Soon deal for Baltimore and surrounding is for $50 to spend on food and drinks for $25 at The Reserve in Baltimore, MD.

  • $10 Starbucks gift card, 50 certificates to The Reserve must be sold.
  • $10 Home Depot Gift Card, 65
  • $10 Target 80, $75 Amazon.com, 100
  • Nintendo DSi, 200
  • A larger item such as an iPad, 500 ($25 * 500= $25,000)

    Hey Amanda,

Thanks for the write-up. We noticed your math on the iPad2 could show a significant profit for Citycents however, our business model favors local merchants by offering them a significant discount in comparison to Groupon and Living Social. We only take a small cut but also leave a bit on the side to reward the community for buying the deal.

By the way the iPad 2 that will be featured on April 1st is in-stock unlike any other retailer in the nation. We were able to secure a few extra by standing in a very long line when the iPad 2 was unveiled. Good luck!

We hope you give it a shot when we launch.
