Penny Auction Gives Back to Wounded Troops & Their Families!

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing decorated Green Beret, Staff Sergeant, Matt Summers. Sgt. Summers received a purple heart after sustaining minor wounds in an IED blast in Afghanistan. After electing to be honorably discharged, he went back to school and obtained his master’s degree. On September 14th, of this year, combining his knowledge and military experience, he launched penny auction PennyWarriors.com. Penny Warriors is Sgt. Summers’ effort to legitimize the penny auction industry and create a new experience for bidders.

Sgt. Summers also formed Penny Warriors to help support our troops. With a long-term commitment to the Special Operations Warriors Foundation (SOWF), Penny Warriors donates the final sale price of all auctioned items to SOWF. SOWF is an organization that provides full scholarship grants as well as educational and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions. SOWF also provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families.

The first penny auction site to offer Experiential Auctions, Penny Warriors will soon offer some pretty exciting opportunities! Read more in our interview:

Penny Auction Watch: What got you interested in the penny auction industry?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors: When I understood the Penny Auction market and model, it was obvious that there was an enormous potential for growth within the industry because the average consumer has not been educated as to what a penny auction is and how they can benefit from our industry.

At the same time, it occurred to us that certain inefficiencies existed in the market, including:

  • A consistent theme of poor execution on most sites
  • A lack of attention to detail
  • An abundance of illicit activity

That being said, I felt that I could assemble a team that could out execute most, if not all, of the competition on each of these fronts. So, that’s what I did.

Penny Auction Watch: What types of items do you offer, and do your auctions run on a schedule?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors: First and foremost, we offer whatever the hottest items are on eBay and Amazon.com. A typical line-up will have lots of electronics, (TV’s, computers, and Apple products) along with some fashion (handbags, sun glasses) and gift cards.

PennyWarriors.com is very proud of our Experiential Auctions, which we will roll out next month in time for the holidays. These are typically once in a lifetime opportunities that we offer to our customers. For instance, in November, we are auctioning off a block of pistol shooting instruction with an active duty Navy SEAL. The Penny Warrior team will fly the winner of the auction to a private range to meet me and my hand picked cadre to lean advanced pistol marksmanship; all expenses paid. We will have our experiential auctions once a month. And in the coming months, our customers can expect to see professional race car driving schools or golf instruction with a pro golfer.

Penny Auction Watch: What are your timer increments between bids and does this vary by auction?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

Currently, each additional bid adds 10 seconds to the clock, but we are upgrading our site and will have a variety of auction types and bidding increments by the first week in November. We are most excited about our “beginner auctions” and our auctions with diminishing timers.

Penny Auction Watch: What do bids cost on Penny Warriors?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

PennyWarriors.com charges between $.60 and $.85, depending on the size of the bid pack purchased. Every new account that registers gets 10 free bids when they sign up.

Penny Auction Watch: What states/countries are you open to?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

All fifty states in the US for now.

Penny Auction Watch: What is your policy for bid refunds?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

If a mistake was made and it’s our fault, then we refund 100% of the bids. End of story.

Penny Auction Watch: Do you enforce any limits?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

We currently have a three wins per week limit.

Penny Auction Watch: What’s the story behind the Penny Warriors name?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors: A few factors went into the name:

  1. The theme that we are promoting is accountability and integrity.
  2. We don’t want to look, feel and sound like everyone else.
  3. I was soldier in the US Army Special Forces, aka a Green Beret, not too long ago.

Given our goals and prior experiences, the military theme and the incorporation of the word “warrior” was a no brainer. Hence, Penny Warriors.

Penny Auction Watch: What makes Penny Warriors unique?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

  1. No shipping costs.
  2. Experiential Auctions e.g. shooting lessons with a Navy SEAL
  3. The best customer service in the industry
  4. Our partnership with Special Operations Warriors Foundation. We donate 100% of each and every strike price of each and every auction to their organization. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides scholarships to the children of fallen Special Operators and financial assistance to their families during times of hardship. I have seen the organization operate first hand and they are an impressive bunch.

Penny Auction Watch: What are your shipping costs?

Sgt. Summers/PennyWarriors:

$0.00. Right, wrong or indifferent, we don’t see shipping as a profit center. We think that by passing along our savings to our customers, we will win their loyalty in the long run.

Thanks! Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers?

  1. We have the best product line up that can be found
  2. We have extremely low transaction costs when compared to all of our competitors
  3. We love our customers and our customers love us as evidenced by the all of the praises we have received on the PAW Blog Thread.
