Why Do Penny Auction Sites Close?

When looking back over the last year and a half there sure have been a lot of penny auctions site that have come and gone, the Penny Auction Watch℠ Out-of-Business Penny Auction site list hasn’t been updated in awhile, but at least another dozen sites can be added to the list of the sites that failed to make it.

One reader posted the following question:

“How come most of these penny auctions close?
How many of them where scamming users?
or just simply not making a profit?”

Well, one site that’s now gone- and that was found to have shills, PennyBiddr.com,  is currently undergoing settlement with the Washington Attorney General,  “The owner of PennyBiddr, based in Federal Way, agreed to shut down the site and refund consumers nationwide… .”

The WA state AG is stepping up to the plate and protecting consumers and we really hope that other state & federal authorities step in. They’ve issued the very important warning, “Some penny auctions use cheap tricks to cheat consumers.” These cheap tricks can include shill bidding, posing as customers and even not communicating or shipping items, among others.

Some that are gone weren’t able to gain enough money to make the venture profitable, some lost on almost every item, they wouldn’t resort to committing fraud by shill bidding. Some didn’t have enough capital starting out to make a go of it, many that didn’t have enough resources to advertise and to use a custom/unique script have failed.

Others that are now out-of-business took whatever money they could from consumers and never shipped items out, then disappeared.

Then there are those who, after disappointing many customers, who left behind an influx of negative reviews, re-opened with new names, some did this a few times (ex. 1, 2).

There are even some sites who have had problems with bidders.

Some penny auction sites just couldn’t make it

The latest site to close, due to lack of customer base, is Bidoction.com, the site owner told us that she is taking a break from running the site and may re-open in 2011, “Bidoction will not post any more auctions starting 10/18/2010. I have decided to give myself some time to think and re-assess my business strategy. It was very surprising to see that after running one of the most honest penny auction site for six months, the consistent user base was not growing. I may decide to reopen the site in 2011 again.”

Bidoction.com was one of the first sites to hide the usernames of their bidders with blind auctions.

“We believe that everyone needs to get a fair chance of bidding in any auction. Thus we introduced Blind auctions. In these auctions, the bidder can only see their user id and the other user’s id is displayed as a random number. When the auction ends, the true user ids are then displayed.”

Another site that recently closed is Jeeler.com,

“ it’s dead. Some slowdown, that would go off and on, caused us to make a tough choice. We took down Jeeler so that we can rethink our future. All bids for auctions that didn’t end will be refilled and then all bids bought will be refunded. We are not sure if it is the script or the server, but sometimes it was fast and sometimes it would just slow, regardless of how many auctions or how many users were on. We truly enjoyed our experience with PA’s but without solid running website it was impossible for us to continue. Thanks to everyone who supported us.”

There’s the sites that closed and didn’t ship items

Take for example Bidtimelive and Bidtime25, yes they had 2 sites, both sites are gone,   back in the beginning of July they told a customer:

“I know it has been a while yes we are working on getting everything caught up now. We have so much to get together that it will probably take us until at least the begginning of next week.  We ,,, I am sorry it has taken so long.  I have been wanting to answer you and others our accountant and programmer kept telling us tomorrow — tomorrow then it was a few more days and a few more days.  I had already told you one thing I didn`t want to keep telling you something again until I knew for sure we would be ready.  It has been long stressing on your part I am sure ours as well I don`t like knowing when I can proceed with doing something I know needs to be done. Hope you have been doing well. Thank you for being patient with us and allowing us the time to straighten this whole mess out.”

They’ve allegedly, according to what users are saying on our forum, disputed chargebacks saying that items have been shipped.

“Oh I don’t think it’s odd anymore. This one was a real eye opener for me. I have come to the conclusion they are real cons & very good at what they do. They knew how to be so nice, just like we were family  If they had one honest bone in their body, they wouldn’t be disputing our claims. If you think back… How convenient they opened that second PA to rake in more before the disappearing act. And the email some of us received, asking for $100 or $300? bid purchase & then we would get Jay’s personal attention & private phone number. Where is the proof they were scammed & ruined by chargebacks? So since they lost money, (so they say) that means we all had to lose everything also and now they are disputing & saying items were shipped?  That takes the cake.”

Then, there’s the sites that had problems with bidders

Another site experienced problems with bidders allegedly cheating them,

“As I previously stated on here I am doing this all by myself with no help from anyone. It may not be as fast as some would like but I am doing the best I can after losing thousands of dollars from certain people who took it upon themselves to lie, cheat and steal from me as well as the users on PAW. I am currently doing my best to try to atleast get back some of what I feel was stolen from me by false pretenses, manipulation and cheating. As I have stated before I do promise to make sure that all real legit users who bought, bid, and won fairly will get their wins.”

Are the people who run penny auction sites even business people or does the model set itself up for failure?

Some, in presenting the model to investors have claimed that it’s flawless, but those of us who have been watching the industry and bidding for over a year now can see that it’s far from fail-proof.

BidPax/BidVoo/iPennyBid Now IceBidz.com

Many months ago we wrote a series of articles on the penny auction sites BidPax, BidVoo, and iPennyBid. We first found iPennyBid.com, and told you that it was of our opinion that they appeared to have bot bidders, soon after our initial posting we received a legal threat from them.

Then, we kept seeing negative comments from readers and  iPennyBid was  eventually gone, they closed “due to licensing reasons” here in the US, but we don’t think this stopped them from continuing their penny auction business. Shortly thereafter, we found their new sites, BidPax.com and BidVoo.com.

Not only were there negative comments on iPennyBid.com from angry users that never won anything, they even required users to scan in their ID cards. [pullquote]Be cautious of scams requiring you to provide your personal information.- IC3 – Identity Theft Prevention Tips:[/pullquote]

“iPennyBid being unable to verify or authenticate user identity using reasonable endeavours, then iPennyBid may ask users to provide photo ID, proof of address and other documentation as iPennyBid requires. Should such proof not be provided, iPennyBid has the rights to suspend or permanently remove such unverified user accounts and withdraw any auctions won by such users.”

After iPennyBid.com closed down, on the two new sites, BidVoo and BidPax, we were not able to see anything here in the US other than a page with Google ads on each, but our international readers were able to and they sent us screenshots showing that both ran auctions, and many simultaneously.

Now it looks like iPennyBid/BidVoo/BidPax is open again, this time with a new name, IceBidz.com

Today we received a comment in our forum from a reader, he said:

“Hey all, I just found icebidz.com and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it, good or bad. I bought some bids, but think I may have been ripped into a scam. Serves me right for jumping in I guess. The company gives an address in Sydney, and is hosted in Singapore, but I can’t tell if its legit.

Wondering if I should waste my time even using my remaining bids as from what I am reading here for every proper penny auction site there are another 2 that are dodgy. Did I just waste $66? How can you know if it is real or not?”

First of all, we knew Singapore sounded familiar (BidPax.com was hosted in Singapore), we then checked out IceBidz.com, if you’re in the US, you’ll only see a page with Google Ads that says:

“IceBidz – Bid, Win and Save! IceBidz provides exciting auctions of brand new products. Save up to 93% on new LCD-TVs or up to 95% on Game Consoles. This is your new home for entertainment shopping!”

Now, the page with the Google ads was definitely familiar, in fact, nearly the exact page we saw on BidPax.com many months ago.

We then viewed the source code and put their Google Analytics code: UA-11026471-1  into adsspy.com, what did we find? Sure enough,  Bidpax.com.icebidz.com

Where is IceBidz Really Located?

With the help of two of our international readers we were able to receive current screenshots of IceBidz.com. It’s interesting to note that the address on the Australian site is much different from the site that our reader in Nicaragua sees, in Nicaragua IceBidz.com displays the address as being in Hong Kong, in Australia the address reads:

IceBidz Entertainment Shopping, Inc.
PO Box 6399 Alexandria
Sydney, NSW 2015 Australia

icebidz australia hong kong

Our other reader sees an entirely different address:

“Yuen Shing Ind. Bldg. 1033,

Yee Kuk West Street,

Cheung Sha Wan,

Kowloon, Hong Kong”

hong kong icebidz.com

IceBidz.com, just like iPennyBid/BidPax/BidVoo, are using Plimus as their payment processor, it also says they accept payment via PayPal.

Whois.DomainTools.com/icebidz.com shows the IP location for icebidz.com, “Singapore Vodien Internet Solutions Pte Ltd, Asia Pacific Network Information Centre- Milton, Queensland”

Previously, BidPax.com posted their location as:

Asia Pacific HQ

9 Hoi Shing Road
Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong

BidVoo, on the other hand, posted an address to a car lot in California and a contact in Canada.

BidVoo.com claimed to be Bidvoo, Inc., at the time we checked with the Secretary of State Bidvoo was not a real, active corporation in the state of California)  The address that they posted was 4365 Lincoln Blvd,   Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, CA  90292

IceBidz displays photo testimonials of smiling people from all over the world, yet none of the photos show anyone with actual items won.

  • Luke & Sarah from Sydney said: “We were skeptical at first, but after several tries we won! Took delivery of new plasma today – Superb!”
  • Ahmad from Malaysia, “I am still trying to get to know my iPhone that arrived yesterday! I can’t believe the price I paid for it!”
  • “Thank you so much! I still cannot believe it” Melissa from Brisbane“,
  • Deepa from New Delhi, India, “Hello and may I extend my sincere gratitude for the Apple Macbook. It is perfect.”

icebidz testimonials

Awhile back we also told you how, this is in our opinion, that it seemed that BidPax had created a fake user testimonial blog entitled “BidPax Scam,” (for when users would search BidPax Scam they would find the positive review site).  We also found it interesting that the only two users to comment here telling us they received items were on proxied IP addresses.

Icebidz.com has an Alexa ranking of 380,564, 21,884 in India, 5,623 in Australia, 19,596 in New Zealand, and 25,675 in Malaysia.

It is of our opinion that it looks to us as if iPennyBid, BidPax and BidVoo, seeing as there were so many complaints about them online, many of them were posted here, probably just saved their penny auction script and just moved on to a new domain name, this time IceBidz.com.

View our previous posts on iPennyBidBidPax, and BidVoo and check out the comments to see what others’ experiences have been.

BidPax Testimonial

A reader and customer of BidPax.com (which was iPennybid) recently wrote us to tell us about their experiences with them and tells us he thinks BidPax has their own fake testimonial website: BidPaxScam.com, which interestingly enough pays for Google Adwords.

“Hi PAW,
Plimus is useless. They force resolve our dispute so i’m not able to get a refund. Anyway, I think you must warn the public again. Bidpax is upping its game of deception by coming up with bogus testimonial website. The following can be a bit long, but please read through.

From BidPax.com to a PAW reader: On 7 November, bidpax said:
“No, we do not want to see the screenshots from a website that accepts paid advertisements from other penny auction websites while claiming they are impartial. As far as we are concerned,
pennyauctionwatch.com is not a reliable source of information because of the way it conducts business. And the fact it has no listed address, phone number or the information behind who is running the website. We are a new website, and winners have absolutely no reason to write about their wins. Why? Because winners do not want to share their experiences most of the time. Many of our winners have strategies that they use to outbid the competition and it serves them no advantage writing reviews about us because it will increase the postivity about our site meaning we grow and their chances of winning decrease. We are in the process of gathering video testimonials from users that we will be displaying on YouTube by December. But, the losers on the website, one being you, out of the thousands of registered users we have feel it’s appropriate to write about us because you feel you’ve lost money. Which is quite understanable, but also the pitfalls of penny auctions. Would you be writing about us if you were successful at any of the auctions? We are a rapidly growing website and we anticipate there are going to be people who lose and will call us a scam, it’s the nature of the penny auction business. Take a look at “Swoopo”, the other main competitor of ours. Have a look at how many bad reviews they have and the amount of websites they have dedicated to calling them a scam. Here’s one: www.swooposcam.ca Why isn’t pennyauctionwatch.com writing about them? Once again, refund request denied.”

This reader wrote to us to tell us that iPennyBid/BidPax insists the numerous negative comments about BidPax that have been left on this site are all shilled comments. They are definitely not shilled by us, they are real comments from unique IP addresses.  We showed him screenshots of the backend as proof.

We find it interesting that the only two comments from people claiming to have received items come from a proxied IP address, BidPax also commented under a proxy.

PAW reader to BidPax: I replied on 8 Nov:
“Now that I have proofs that the comments are not shilled, you’re giving another excuse that it is not reliable etc. How about me asking – how do I know if your site is not shilled? PROVE it. there is such a thing as a private DNS. you can contact
pennyauctionwatch.com if you want and I don’t think they ever claimed to be impartial. Who’s running bidpax by the way? At least i know chris bauman is senior manager of Swoopo and he’s a real face. Let’s hear bidpax come out and defend yourself. You are shooting yourself in the foot by saying users do not wish to write about you guys so that they can increased their chances of winning BUT yet you would show VIDEO testimonies of them. Thanks for contradicting yourself. By the way, real winners DO write about their wins. A Swoopo winner even writes about his strategies. That’s a REAL site, not a scam like yours which no one would speak up for. And to use Swoopo as a further example since you have cited it, there’s even a community site for Swoopo winners. And in other sites and forums, there are many winners who stood up for Swoopo as well as there are complaints. Bidpax? let me repeat again – THERE is STILL no authenticated proofs that anyone has won anything in the WORLD WIDE WEB from bidpax. You have MANY auctions that have been closed and ALL you have are COMPLAINTS. NO ONE has ever claimed they have won anything nor STOOD UP for you. The onus is for you to prove yourself which you have not.”
(Me: and of course, Plimus do not read all these. they’re just in for the transaction money. thumbs down)

“After this dispute in Nov, bidpax set up a website to “authenticate” winners and even ADVERTISE on google!!! The website?http://www.bidpaxscam.com/ (do a search on bidpax scam and the advert comes up)

1. The website is set up on 4 Nov. I believe shortly i claimed that Swoopo has winners backing them up in the above dispute msg. (they can change the date a message is posted)

2. Bidpax is an idiot. Look at the user comments. http://www.bidpaxscam.com/bidpax-is-not-a-scam#respond
The timing of the 3 winning comments are 10.17pm, 10.20pm and 10.22pm – all on the SAME day. AND they attempt to discredit PAW again

3. Who in the right frame of mind will spend money to advertise a site to support an auction site that he has won in? Not only that. The site creator calls himself BidPax.

Please warn users of www.bidpaxscam.com

One more thing, the previous bogus site http://bidpax.wordpress.com/ became active in NOV again.

These rogues are dangerous!!! Must get rid of such scums!”-PAW Reader

We have never once made claims that BidPax/iPennyBid.com was a scam, we only told you that it in our opinion it looked like iPennyBid MIGHT have shill bidders and opened it up for discussion. We even told iPennyBid by e-mail that they are welcome to prove themselves and the number of unsatisfied customers who  have commented here and all over the Internet wrong.

Is it a mere coincidence that BidPax, in their e-mail to their customer, and a commentator on BidPaxScam.com/winner from Australia both make mention of the website swooposcam.ca and why we have not talked about that on PennyAuctionWatch.bidpax_comment

Why have we not talked about Swooposcam.ca? Simple, Swoopo was the first (as far as we know) penny auction in the world and has a significant amount of traffic, they have told many media outlets including the BBC that they do not shill their auctions. Swooposcam.ca is not saying Swoopo MIGHT have bots, they are making a claim as a matter of fact that they use bots:

“Similar to the above example, Swoopo sold ’300 bids’, which at the time were worth $.75 each, for $700.80. Buying them directly through the site would only cost you $225, so why the hell would someone pay over $700 for them? It’s simple, those damn bots are at it again!”-Swooposcam.ca

How does Swooposcam.ca have proof of this? No one has proof without seeing  the scripts & financial records.

In closing, since we are located in the USA and BidPax is not open to the US market we have not actually seen BidPax.com in action, but we have seen their two previous auctions iPennyBid and BidVoo.com, readers have sent in screenshots and left many comments on previous posts. Here are screenshots of both BidPaxScam.com and of the comments left on BidPaxScam.com.

Now the question we should all ask BidPax is this:

  1. why are they anonymous?
  2. why is their server located offshore with Zentek-International? The same hosting used by them when they ran iPennyBid (Canada based?) and  BidVoo (California based?)
  3. and finally, why were the only positive comments (2) and their own comment left on this site posted from a proxied IP’s? (not to mention our blog software automatically detected it as spam)

Have you tried BidPax? Please tell us about your experiences with them and feel free to join our forum.  Thanks!

Penny Auctions Go Global

<div xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#" about="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mirkogarufi/514406103/"><a rel="cc:attributionURL" href=

Penny Auctions are prominent in the UK and rapidly gaining momentum in the US. It’s no wonder that the entertainment shopping phenomenon has now gone global.

For instance, there’s BidPax (which was iPennyBid from Canada) in Hong Kong, and Swiraa in Switzerland:swiraa.ch

Nows there’s PaddyGold from Ireland that ships to more than 160 countries.

paddygold

All three penny auctions appear to have tons of bidders and many premium items. Have you tried either of these auctions?

We’ve also been contacted by a new penny auction that plans to soon open to the Chinese market, we’ll let you know more about them soon.

iPennyBid Gets a New Name Again

Updated: A reader just posted a very valuable piece of information, a traceroute for BidPax points to iPennyBid the same penny auction that we have received numerous complaints about.

tracerouteAnd here is a screenshot of BidPax sent in from a reader in New Zealand (Thanks!):bidpax penny auction

A few days ago we told you that penny auction iPennybid has changed sites and
names to BidVoo, well iPennyBid is now BidPax.
Here are a few of the recent comments we’ve received:

“sigh. maybe it was lack of sleep, but i fell prey to the bidpax hype via an ad on facebook – now after 20mins of googling (and $240 down the toilet), it’s time to go to bed…” -vbids
“BidVoo has now gone? www.BidPax.com is the new replacement?”-Kiwifan

“here is an interesting addition…
there is another site up called bidpax.com. I found it via facebook adds (strange?) never the less. i thought of trying it out and when i registered. the mail is as such.
——————————————————————————————-
From : info@bidpax.com
Thanks for registering on BidVoo.com
Here is a quick summary of how it Works
Unlike conventional auctions, members pay each time a bid is placed. This means the final selling price can be up to 99% off the recommended retail price.
Each time a bid is placed, the price increases by 1 penny and the time extends by 10 seconds. The winner is the final bidder when the timer reaches 00:00:00.
To start with, register on our website completely free of charge and take a look around. If you see an auction you’d like to participate on, simply load your account with “bids” by purchasing a bid package. A bid package will give you the right to start bidding on any of our auctions. Remember, you use these bids to participate on auctions on BidVoo.com. Buying a bid package does not mean you are are an automatic winner, you utilise each bid to try to outbid any other interested bidders!
