Last night, 8/11, “Amanda” from PursePenny.com joined the Penny Auction Watch forum to promote the brand new penny auction site.
At first glance the site looks pretty decent, judging by the number of new bidders who have jumped in to try it out, the items seem to be good as well. However, considering that it just launched, according to Amanda, yesterday (Thursday), it’s not accurate that they state “Thousands of winners” on their homepage. And the “testimonial” image found on the item pages? Where did they come from if the site launched just yesterday?
Also, notice how this penny auction site displays ”TRUSTe” and VeriSign Secured logo/”seals” on the bottom of their page, they’re all bunched together in one image, but are they really verified by either company?
Plus, there doesn’t appear to be an SSL certificate on their site. You know, what keeps your credit card and other sensitive info safe.
What’s also odd is that when I did a whois lookup on their IP address used on our forum it showed a name of “PennyPurses.com” for their host name.
PennyPurses.com is a penny auction site specializing in designer handbag items, they’ve been open for over 2 years now. They’re not affiliated with PursePenny.com.

Their terms & conditions state that they are in Toronto, Canada, their business name is stated to be Purse Pennys, Inc. The site is hosted on a server in the United Kingdom:
I purchased a business name lookup on Ontario’s OBC website and received a “No match found” statement:

It’s also interesting to note that they have multiple listings of the very same item, this is not to say that they do not indeed have all of these items. The duplicates can be found on their 8 pages of active items and among their 158 ended items.
There are 2 Gucci Continental wallets with a retail price of $412, both, among many other items, are set to end today. They also have 2 Louis Vuitton Greta Handbags valued at $2,400, a few $470 Manolo Blahniks and YSL heels too.
I just did the math, from right now 4 pm, until Midnight CST tonight they have $15,296.04 in retail items queued to end. This total doesn’t include the items that have already ended since Midnight last night, or bid pack auctions.
One PAW forum member told us that they won a few items, Gucci handbags, $250 gift cards and more, but according to PursePenny.com since this member is not a “VIP” member items will not be shipped until 10 days.
“The VIP program will be available to bidders who have spent more than $500with us in a life time.”
As soon as I found that PursePenny was calling their host “pennypurses.com,” I informed Chris over at PennyPurses, he wrote back and said that they have stole PennyPurses’ content and photos.

What do you think is going on here? Will PursePenny.com really ship out the $15k+ in penny auction items today if all of them end and are claimed? I sure hope so.

Hello all! Thanks for all the information about penny sites. I am currently trying to learn as much as possible so I dont end up using a site that is not legit.
I was wondering what type of penny auction format is preferred for customers?? I would imagine some formats are more popular than others and give the customer the best chances at winning.
Also, what are the 5 tip complaints about PA sites? For example, too long? too much competition? etc?

I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d say the best format is one with 100% buy it now + no automatic bidding i.e. bid buddy for customers. 5 complaints: Slow ship time, powerbidders, bots, shills, overall just any scam site… Competition really depends, but some have made it their goal to bid to win so they won’t back down most of the time…= losses for a penny auction site when bidders know this is going to be the case.
