Look Out for Software Glitches

A member of the PAW Forum & customer of BidRay wrote to tell us that they won an auction multiple times, yet never really won it.

The camera is a 2 minute interval auction the timer went to 0 for 1 full minute and then another bidder bid and the auction continued – screen shots are posted. I have sent an email demanding they ship the camera.

What’s the Explanation?:

There was a glitch  (much like what happened on the Go-kart auction over on Rocky Bid) that allowed new bidders to bid after the auction had closed.

We’ve said it before and we’ll probably say it again, penny auction software is not foolproof.

a fun and safe site through customer satisfaction. We regret that we have let our
valuable members down this past weekend, and have given our everything to resolve
these issues within a reasonable time, as well as compensate all those who feel
that they have been at a disadvantage due to the errors in our website.

We have experienced a number of cases much like yours, which we have fortunately
been able to come into an agreement with our loyal member base, who have been
very understanding and patient with us through these difficult times. I firmly hope and believe
that we can come into one with you, too.

While Bidray’s official Terms & Conditions state that “Bidray is not to be held responsible
for any delays that occur in bidding or on the auctions. Bidray strives to make the Bidray
clock as accurate as possible with the best technology available, however Bidray cannot
guarantee the accuracy of the bidding clock.”, I fully understand your frustration in
this case.

Unfortunately I cannot send the camera out as each of our auctions has just one winner.
However, I feel that your auction experience clearly hasn’t been what it was supposed to be.
I have decided to return all the 55 bids that your wife has purchased back into her account,
as well as offer her a chance of receiving a full refund of the $49.75 she paid for them, in
case she feels that she has lost the trust in our auction system and does not want to place
any bids anymore. In this case, I would appreciate if you could inform me of this matter
within the next 72 hours.

I would like to underline here that this type of compensation – just like the error in our auction –
is highly unusual, as all our bids are normally non-returnable and non-refundable.

I can’t stress enough how much we appreciate your patience in this matter, and
I truly hope that you will be able to give us a second chance at giving you a fun,
exciting and secure auction experience.

If there’s anything else I could do to regain your trust in us, do not hesitate to contact
our support again.

PS. I can confirm that the $100 Best Buy Voucher your wife won has been sent out to her
today (following business day of the item won), like all our won items always are. Thank
you for the prompt payment of the item which will be donating to the charity of her
choice (United Way).

However, unfortunately for the bidder, it is not standard practice for a penny auction site to let the user receive the item after a glitch has occurred.

It’s good that BidRay is honest about it and are trying to make good on this issue by refunding bids!

Software glitches are just something you need to look out for when bidding on penny auctions.

Oh yeah, before I forget: Here’s how to take a print screen image (just in case you may encounter a problem or to show off your win!).

On Windows:

  • Leave the screen that you want a capture of up on your desktop.
  • See the  FN key on your keyboard? It’s to the right of your left CTRL key. Now find the  PRT SC key, it should be on the top right hand side of your keyboard, to the left or right of your scroll key.
  • Ok now that you’ve found them click on the screen, touch both the FN & the PRT SC keys at the same time, release.
  • Then open up Paint and paste the print screened image in there (ctrl+v). Make sure you save this.
  • Done. You just took a print screen!

On a MAC:

  • Switch to the screen that you want to to do the print screen capture. 
  • Hold down Apple key ⌘ + Shift + 3 and release all
  • Then use your mouse to click on the screen.
  • You will see a picture file in your desktop. That’s the
    screen shot image.
